๐Ÿท Name change: ChessMoves AI โ†’ ChessMoves

Kept for reference, not planned. Written on 8 October 2026 after the question "if I want to remove the AI from the name, will that be easy?" The counts and the domain check below are read live from the running server each time this page opens; the checklist, the risks and the history are written by hand.

Easy in the code; the work is outside it
The site's own text is a careful find-and-replace and a test run, about an hour. What takes time is everything that carries the name elsewhere: the domain and its email addresses, Stripe (the trading name, product names and the line on customers' card statements), the mobile app listings, and the share image. Recommendation: keep chessmovesai.com unless a chessmoves domain can be had, since a site's name does not have to match its domain; and decide before the mobile app ships and before search rankings and paying customers build up under the current name.

Where the name appears now

Every file the running server sends to visitors (public/, as built) and its compiled code (dist/: email senders, search tags), counted live. The repository holds more (tests, docs, scripts, the mobile projects), which a rename edits too.

Domains

Checked live through DNS. A domain with name servers belongs to someone; one without is often free, but only a registrar can confirm it, and a taken domain can sometimes be bought.

Decide first

The checklist, in order

Ordered so that nothing customers see changes before the name is safe to use, and the domain moves only if it moves at all.

Never rename these

Technical names that look like the old brand but are wired into installed apps, browsers or servers. The last rebrand's find-and-replace caught one of them and broke lesson video until it was put back.

Risks

How the name got here

Related: the Stripe page (trading name, products, statement descriptor) and the readiness page. Trademark costs and classes are a guide, not legal advice: confirm them with a professional before filing.
